How Exercise Improves Your Cognitive Health

Exercise! It Improves Your Cognitive Health

We all know that exercise is good for our muscles and bones, but the benefits of exercise go much deeper than that. Exercise can help improve your thinking abilities, even as a mature (or very mature) adult, and there's a science to back it up. Let's explain.

Exercise helps your body to create new blood vessels in the brain, which greatly improves cognitive function. Various studies show that those who exercise for just less than six months increase the part of the brain that controls cognitive function and memory, compared to those who don't exercise.

About 20% of those over the age of 55 report experiencing some type of mental health concern during the later stages of life. Unfortunately, one of the most common mental health concerns raging amongst the elderly is depression. Harvard Medical School published an article that mentioned a few severe side effects of depression, including the impairment of information processing. It also erodes decision-making skills and hinders the ability to execute daily functions. In a recent study, it was found that 70% of those who exercised regularly over 6 months had significant decreases in depression symptoms, compared to those who did not exercise. of Because it releases oxytocin and other feel-good chemicals in the brain, exercise can improve depression symptoms, help you feel better overall, and improve some cognitive functions that may have been lost.

This is old news to health professionals, which is one reason why they recommend that seniors aged 65+ exercise for at least 150 minutes per week. If you're struggling to begin an exercise routine or improve your health in any way, we would like to offer you a tip.

Choose one goal to implement exercise, then stay consistent.

To improve the likelihood of consistency, choose one act of exercise that you would be willing to perform right now and stick with it. If you'd be willing to walk five minutes per day on a treadmill while you read emails, create a goal to implement it daily. Consistency is a powerful tool and can be a foundation for great things.

We wish you well on the road to improving your physical health and cognitive function.
